History of the Gingerbread House

The Gingerbread House Restaurant in Rangeley Maine

The Gingerbread House started as Fowler’s market and was a sporting goods store and post office.  The mail would arrive by train and then be distributed to the local population by dog sled.  Mr. Fowler had a full kennel of snow dogs for the task.  In the 50’s the store turned into the Gingerbread House Restaurant serving a breakfast and a light lunch, but mostly known for it’s Ice Cream Sundaes and full Ice Cream Selection.  The old fashioned Ice Cream Soda Fountain still in place today arrived in the 1950’s. In 1997, the renovations and improvements really began when the Gingerbread House doubled in size, opened up in-door and out-door porches and turned into a casual fine dining restaurant that can sit around 100 patrons, yet we still maintain the original character of the building and the wild life and quaint village setting.

Today the Gingerbread House is owned and operated by the Kfoury family who have lived and been part of the Oquossoc area for over 50 years.  The Gingerbread House has been written up as one of the best restaurants in Fodor’s travel magazine and featured in Golf magazine.  We serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner all year round only being closed for the month of November and the month of April.   We are known for our mouth watering omelets and eggs benedict and our famous crab cakes, fresh seafood and ribs for dinner.
